13/03/2020: BOOK REVIEW: Great British Family Names and Their History - What’s in a Name? By John Moss

As a writer, I got this book to assist with character names and the history attached to them, which occasionally helps with character development, psychology and background. I wasn’t disappointed – although I suspect Moss didn’t write the book for this purpose. Primarily, it is a snapshot of British family names from their derivation including any translations from the Domesday Book. It covers absolutely everything you'd likely enquire about them such as chequered back stories and the sorts of people who chose England as their home.

With several map diagrams complete with key, Moss gives so much historical information by way of his extensive research that it is not a book for a single sitting but a reference book to dip in and out. While I read it to furnish my character writing research, it would make a useful companion to genealogists too, not to mention those who enjoy learning historical facts. The world is a better place for the intricate and curious minds of people like Moss. Reviewed by Sarah Banham www.loveofbooks.co.uk for Pen and Sword History
