09/03/2020: Opinion Blog: Ups and Downs

I’ve not published an opinion blog for a few weeks. Mostly this was down to pressure of other work and my mind wasn’t clear enough to think of anything worthwhile to say. However, I recently spoke at a quarterly event I run and talked about blogging, so it seemed right that I should publish another one. The day needed a lot of preparation, so much in fact that I was very anxious before the actual talk. It went well, though, I’m pleased to say and afterwards I was left feeling a mixture of relief and euphoria. Several hours later, and completely unconnected with the event, a writing-related email came through. As I read it my stomach turned to ice because this is how my body interprets shock or upset – in this case, a rejection. I’ve been a writer for a lot of years and understand how the industry works. One minute you are just getting somewhere and the and next you’re being rejected. This is the world we live in. However, it is also life. It wouldn’t matter if you’d had a great day with bargain-hunting in the sales and you’d come home to a broken washing-machine, the point remains there are ups and downs in everyday life.

So my up and down happened within hours of each other this weekend, but now it’s Monday and I’m starting the week with a clean sheet - even if I am still slightly irritated by the rejection, but amused enough by it to write a blog (who knows, maybe a podcast or radio show will happen too) - ready to get my penultimate essay started for university . Whatever your ups and downs recently, feel free to let me know and maybe we can begin a dialogue about them with a view to support and encouraging each other. See you soon. Sjb x
